Casa del Fútbol Argentino / Argentine Football Hall of Fame
Football is one of the main sources of contemporary mythology. It produces identities, crystallizes rituals. Popular sport events are time-markers, punctuating days, seasons, years, and entire ages. Popular sports are, and by definition, mass rituals, hosted in specific architectural objects, extending their influence in an infinite variety of spatial conditions and collective narrations. Dealing with time, space and the social dynamic itself, sport events are also political. In few other places as in Argentina this political dimension of football has been so evident. The Argentine Football Hall of Fame is the temple of this (controversial) memory. It hosts the memorabilia of one of the greatest football traditions in the world and it celebrates the violent love of Argentines for the sport. It is a temple for pride and victory and a shelter for desperation and loss. Football celebrates obvious heroes and keeps memory of a plural, multiple popular tradition. It monumentalizes figures such as Mario Kempes, Daniel Passarella and Diego Maradona, while at the same reflecting on the politicization of football under the colonel’s regime and its problematic role in relation to Argentine nationalism.
